Northwood Assembly began construction on its new campus within the developing Carnes Crossroads community this month with a ground breaking ceremony for the first phase of construction. The Carnes Crossroads campus will be developed in several phases on 60 acres of land donated by the Daniel Island Company. The first phase will include the construction of a main auditorium, childcare center, Kid’s Town chapel, youth ministry environments and administrative offices. Completion of Phase One is tentatively scheduled for late 2011.
“It’s been a long time coming, but after four years of planning and praying, our dream is finally becoming a reality,” said Pastor Fred Richard of Northwood Assembly. “Our church is ready for a permanent home, and we look forward to partnering with the Daniel Island Company to provide ministry and an excellent education choice to our new neighbors.”
In August of 2006 Northwood’s main sanctuary building, which included a worship auditorium, administrative offices and a childcare center, was destroyed by a fire. Since, temporary buildings within the existing campus have been serving Northwood’s needs. Future plans for construction at the Carnes Crossroads campus include the addition of buildings for Northwood Academy’s lower and upper schools, including gymnasiums, a cafeteria and athletic fields.
The Northwood campus will be one of the first components of the Daniel Island Company’s new planned community at Carnes Crossroads. The community is being designed to incorporate many of the same details and amenities found on Daniel Island and to appeal to both a local and national market. Due to its central location, businesses, offices, schools, churches, shops and restaurants will play an integral role in making Carnes Crossroads an important destination for Goose Creek and Berkeley County.
“Northwood Assembly and Northwood Academy have been visible fixtures in the greater Charleston area for decades and we are quite pleased to have them relocating to the heart of our new community,” said Matt Sloan, President of the Daniel Island Company. “When development of Daniel Island was first getting started in the mid-1990s, we were fortunate to have Bishop England High School establish roots within the community as the island’s first school. That provided a wonderful center around which our town would eventually grow, and we expect that the multi-faceted components of Northwood’s campus will do the same for Carnes Crossroads.”
For more than 30 years, Northwood Assembly has provided an interdenominational fellowship for a diverse body of worshipers, offering comprehensive services to the community including child care, counseling, boys’ and girls’ clubs, education, community outreach, sports programs and pastoral care. It has taken a non-traditional approach to church growth, choosing to help start local, community churches instead of building a “mega church” campus. The reach and influence of Northwood in the Charleston region is extensive: It has financially sponsored and sent trained teams of people to establish community churches in Mt. Pleasant, peninsular Charleston, West Ashley, Summerville and Moncks Corner. Northwood’s new campus at Carnes Crossroads will remain the center of the church’s activities.
Northwood Academy was founded in 1978 to provide a safe, quality education choice for the community. It has since established a reputation as a strong academic institution, providing extra-curricular activities and competitive athletics for an economically and ethnically diverse population. Northwood currently enrolls more than 900 students from communities across the tri-county area.
